Our mission is to foster Finnish culture and language = Suomen kulttuuri ja kieli, as a vital part of families where children have one or more parents with Finnish roots. We aim to provide contact and interest to the language, and keep traditions and culture alive in a warm, safe and welcoming environment. "Hei, olen myös suomalainen ja puhun suomea!" All arts, including music, visual arts, literature, dance, crafts, as well as older and newer games and plays are all part or the curriculum. Suomi-koulu welcomes all children ages 2-12, previous Finnish language skills not necessary but very helpful.
Parents' continual help and input are crucial part of our function; parents volunteer and bring forth areas of their own expertise during school meeting times, as well as continue to speak and read in Finnish at home (according skill and ability). Suomi-koulu has a library of books in Finnish for kids ages 0-16, and also new are some books for parents, carers etc. We also feature a movie night once a semester.
We meet approximately two Sundays per month from September through May (observing various holidays and school breaks), usually at the Cafe at FinnHall, but occasionally we go on field-trips elsewhere (nature areas, FAHA, ice-skating, special performances..) Fall semester end on the FinnHall Christmas party with puuro, ihanimpia joululauluja, and a play = näytelmä presented by Suomi-koulu children, and more. Spring Mothers' Day trip to FAHA, and ending with kevätjuhlat.
Lukukausimaksu, or tuition per semester is $30 per first child and $20 each additional child. Current teachers include Jenni Lehdenvirta and Lotta Weckström. Anyone interested in further info, including all the dates, should email Kati Schenker at firstname.lastname@example.org
